Social media scams in India grow by whopping 156%: Symantec report

International security firm Symantec claims that every sixth social media scam impacts India, with the country seeing a whopping 156% rise in such nefarious schemes. The nation is apparently the most besieged nation in Asia and second on a global scale.

As per Symantec’s Internet Security Threat Report, nearly 94% of these social media scams were spread through manual sharing. The high figure indicates that India is still a top target for attackers looking to take advantage of the trust people have online in order to get them on the hook via phishing or fake links.

In more bad news, India also ranks 6th when it comes to the most targeted businesses in Asia, with organizations getting attacked at least twice on average in 2015. Mining firms are supposedly the highest risk prone sector, in addition to the public utilities and financial segment.

Furthermore, India has worryingly managed to move up the ladder from the 5th to the 3rd position under the category of the most financial Trojan infections globally. Large enterprises are additionally 6 times more likely to be targeted at least once a year when compared with small organizations, even though only 30% of attacks last year were directed towards the former.

The security situation in India is not all doom and gloom though. Previously considered the spam capital of the world, the nation has been seeing a regular decrease in the quantity of spam. So much so, it now ranks 18th as a source of spam, down from its 6th place spot back in 2014.
