Samsung dethrones Nokia to take No. 1 spot in Indian handset segment

Samsung has proved its worth across the globe by becoming the number one handset manufacturer and it was just a matter of time before it overtook Nokia’s sales in India to take the top spot in the country as well. And finally it has happened. The South Korean company is now officially the market leader as far as mobile phones are concerned, says CyberMedia’s annual Voice & Data 2012-13 report.

Samsung’s growth in the subcontinent is worth noticing because it succeeded in increasing the revenue from Rs 7,891 crores in the previous fiscal year to Rs 11,328 crores this year. And while achieving this feat, it managed to claim a 31.5 percent share in the handset market. Nokia was the market leader for a long time now, but looks like the popularity of the Android platform has resulted in a decline in its share. The Finnish OEM now has 27.2 percent hold in the country.

For those who are wondering about Nokia’s revenues in India, here are the figures. The company that earned Rs 11,925 crores in the year 2011-12, sold mobile phones worth Rs 9,780 crores in this financial year. Apart from the Android platform, the price point and the varied screen sizes are the advantages of the Samsung devices and are even responsible for the sudden growth in the conglomerate’s revenues.

The homegrown Indian companies are not far behind and seem to be catching up with the big players. Micromax has grabbed the third position on the list with a market share of 8.7 percent. There was a 14.7 percent increase in the total revenue which stands at Rs 35,946 crores.
