Reliance 3G now cheaper than 2G, throws rival telecoms a challenge

Reliance Communications has just taken the battle for subscribers to the next level by introducing 3G data plans that are even cheaper than its 2G schemes. This comes amidst news of other players like Airtel, Idea Cellular, Tata and Videocon fighting it out with reduced 2G, 3G or 4G plans, in an attempt to gain a larger user base.

And we must say, the price points at which these schemes have been introduced by RCOM would be very tempting indeed, if our experience with the company’s 3G network packages wasn’t dismally below average. But if you’re one of those folks who can claim to be satisfied with the company’s services, the new rates are worth celebrating. 1GB of 2G data costs Rs 125, while a 1GB 3G pack is pegged at Rs 123 currently.

RCOM has also offered a brief calculation of what customers can do with 1GB. The bundle is touted to be good enough for 3 full length movies not crossing 300MB or 40 to 50 videos on YouTube with a file size of roughly 25MB or around 250 4MB songs. The network operator’s 2GB 3G scheme is marked at Rs 246 and its 4GB package is priced at Rs 492. But that doesn’t cover it all.

Taking the fight right up to other service providers’ doorsteps, the company is promising 1GB of free data per month over 2 months for those who have switched loyalty via mobile number portability. The freshly unveiled plans can be availed of by users on prepaid as well as billing. It’ll be interesting to see how other telecoms react to this move. We’re waiting.
