Official Gingerbread update for Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 revealed

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

Previously launched in 2010, the Xperia X10 is one of the long runners from Sony Ericsson and is now upgradable to the Android 2.3 OS. Previously running on the Elcair OS and stating it to be the last update, users will most certainly be overwhelmed with the new features offered.

Packed with the update are many functions from the Xperia Arc. Featuring a new UI, the device will have a desktop appearance and pinch-to-zoom gesture capability. Along with the Wi-Fi and USB tethering, applications can now be stored on memory cards instead of the phone memory. Beside the integration of an equalizer for the music player, DLNA is suspected to be excluded from the upgrade due to lack of time to prioritize the approvals needed.

Aditionally, the Xperia X10 mini and mini pro will not be seeing any update as the amount of RAM required for smooth operation is apparently not present. For installation, the software will have to be downloaded on a PC along with the computer companion application. Also, on updating, users will not be able to downgrade their device.

The Gingerbread OS update for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 smartphone is now available. Currently, the upgrade is only for devices with the generic trade kit. Further on, the company plans on releasing it for some operator kits and customized versions of the Xperia X10 over time. For those on a customized version of the handset can utilize the unofficial method to acquire the Gingerbread OS by rooting the phone.
