Nokia Lumia to get Pelican super camera, power of Lytro

Nokia is keen on bringing the power of Lytro to its future Lumia phones and Pelican will help it achieve this goal. Not only that, the brand is also eying the dual SIM market for the range since the popularity of such devices only seems to be growing by the day.

The company’s executive vice president in charge of Smart Devices, Jo Harlow, was caught talking about computational imaging at the unveiling of the Lumia 925 in London. Computational imaging is apparently a feasible idea at present and it needs further exploration. In other words, if Nokia puts its purchase of Pelican to good use, a smartphone with the power of Lytro may be on the cards.

Refocusing Technology

Lytro light field photography basically allows users to take a picture without really focusing on anything within the frame. Once the photo is clicked, users can go back to it and bring into focus any area of the image that they wish to appear the sharpest. To put it simply, the technology captures much more data than the human eye is capable of seeing until the person viewing the concerned picture actually plays around with it to bring various aspects of it into focus.

We’re talking about a fantastical notion of a lens which sees everything and captures images quickly due to the fact that there’s no need to spend time focusing on a scene before clicking. In an interview with Rajat Agrawal from BGR.in, Harlow noted that with the processing power of the smartphones of today, bringing computational photography to these devices is an area which can be considered.

Multi-Lens Camera On Phone

The Finnish manufacturer sure seems to be doing everything to stay on top after what was widely seen as a less than impressive bet on Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS. It’s been launching one Lumia after another and we might venture to say that some of these have been helping to shine favorable light on the brand. It even wowed everyone with the 808 PureView which packs a 41MP sensor into its chunky Symbian body.

Now if the rumored Nokia EOS actually has PureView technology, it’s unlikely that we’ll witness a blend of a Lumia and a Pelican super camera here. So this must be another device with the novelty of Lytro that Harlow was talking about.
