New iPad drops ‘4G’ moniker, replaced by ‘Cellular’ in some countries

iPad New Name 01

Apple’s new iPad ‘Wi-Fi + 4G’ variant now tags along a different name and will be referred to as ‘Wi-Fi + Cellular’ instead. This move has been taken following a host of complaints from those interested in the technology giant’s newest slab.

The fact that the slate offers compatibility with the 4G LTE network in just the US and Canada via 5 carriers was the main point of debate. So the base of the problem lies in the claim that the 4G branding in countries without support for the said network is unfounded.

Though Apple does have a notification stating the lack of support for WiMAX or 4G LTE in the concerned regions, the name being taken off from the official site is the most effective step in this regard. In terms of the second generation iPad, the models that support the 3G network will still be called as ‘Wi-Fi + 3G.’

According to a post on 9to5Mac, the Cupertino-based company has not incorporated the new name just in the UK and Australia which were primarily noted as the affected parties. This initiative has been implemented in many other countries like Vietnam, Canada, Singapore, New Zealand, Hong Kong, UAE, the US, Ireland, Malaysia and Thailand.

For the Apple Online Store in Australia, the company has issued a message along with the removal of the branding. It basically informs potential users that the slab may support fast cellular networks, but not the country’s 4G LTE and WiMAX networks. Wireless connectivity can be attained by signing up for a monthly data plan via the respective service provider along with the choice of canceling it at any point of time.

So from now on, the Apple new iPad ‘Wi-Fi + 4G’ will be marked ‘Wi-Fi + Cellular,’ as seen on the official site and retail outlets.
