Motorola to launch Android-based handset?

Motorola logoMotorola, it is believed will be the first company in the world to release an iDen Android-powered phone. The Israeli subsidiary of Motorola called Mirs is supposedly working on this device. The handset is apparently known as Opus 1 and will support Wi-Fi connectivity, according to Globes.

“Motorola has yet to make a formal announcement about an Android product, other tan to say that the company intends to be a leading player on this platform and all technologies towards the end of the year,” mentioned Motorola Israel.

Offered support by the company’s network for voice, the upcoming phone is pretty surprising. This is mainly because the company is known to launch phones using the GSM technology. If true, this will be the first time when they will use the Android platform for their mobile phones.

Also a Google-phone working on the Mirs network does not offer speedy Internet access in every location. Though via Opus 1, users are expected to gain access to numerous Internet applications. These, however should work only when connected to Wi-Fi networks, thus reducing mobility in terms of the phone’s features.
While there is no official word on the phone yet, this Android-based handset is likely to be in stores in early 2010.
