Mobile phones account for 10% of web traffic: StatCounter Global Stats

StatCounter Report

After the iPad was cited to be eating up a substantial bit of tablet web traffic, a StatCounter Global Stats report has revealed that internet access via smartphones has almost doubled since last year. As observed by the investigators, web usage via handsets has approximated to 8.5% this year, as compared to the 4.3% noted last year.

According to the results of the study, Nokia is the worldwide forerunner in terms of internet traffic, possibly because of its widespread use in India. On a global basis, Apple stood second, but claimed the first position with regards to markets in the UK and the US. BlackBerry apparently took away the second spot in the UK.

“While global internet usage through mobiles is still under 10%, the pace of growth is remarkable. Following repeated requests, we’ve decided to make our new mobile vendor stats publicly available. As the mobile space is constantly evolving, we keep our detection under constant review,” commented Aodhan Cullen, StatCounter.

Internet access via mobile phones seems to have increased steadily over the years. It started with 0.7% in January 2009, after which there was an elevation to 1.6% in January 2010. In the last 2 years, the scale drifted from 4.3% to 8.5%, which is roughly double the statistics seen in 2011.

In spite of the consistent growth seen in mobile web traffic, the cumulative usage of internet via phones on a global scale is supposedly less than 10%. Nevertheless, the StatCounter Global Stats report showed that the pace of growth has been significant.
