Micromax boasts of 1 million Canvas smartphone sales

A little over two years after Micromax announced its Canvas series, it has finally come to a point where it can claim to have sold 1 million units of handsets belonging to this profile. The Indian company may have entered the smartphone game in 2008, but it is the portfolio in question which kicked off in March 2010, that brought it under the spotlight.

The manufacturer set the foundation of this series with the A100 which at approximately Rs. 10,500, offered a 5-inch screen estate along with Android Ice Cream Sandwich and a Cortex A5 processor clocked at 1GHz. Looks like the production of the smartphone however, has been stopped permanently.

Seeing that the handset has managed to garner its fair share of attention, the manufacturer took a step further and launched the A110. Second in the series, this device bagged in a 5-inch display similar to the aforementioned gadget, but gave shelter to a dual core MediaTek CPU. It began shipping with Android ICS, although it received a Jelly Bean update last month. The handset is currently residing in various stores across the country and can be purchased at Rs. 10,999.

Riding on the success of these two phones, the manufacturer then decided to try its luck once again with the A116 HD. To shake things up, it wished to place before customers a smartphone housing a Mediatek-crafted quad core chipset at a surprisingly less amount of Rs. 13,990.

However, things didn’t go exactly as planned when some alteration in the Finance Bill took place. The retail value was then revised to Rs. 14,799, though those who had rushed to pre-order the device had been excused from this fresh arrangement. Nevertheless, the gadget has proved to be successful in creating quite a rave. In fact, it attracted far more customers than its dual core predecessor.

While the Micromax Canvas HD is still basking in the glory, the conglomerate seems to have two more smartphones up its sleeve. Rumors of a particular A115 3D had earlier crept out, stating that it is preparing to land in shopping outlets with a 5-inch screen showing off 3D images on its UI. Although the company hasn’t verified its existence just yet, it can now be seen on some online stores. The other device to have been spotted in leaked pictures is the A111, which according to the rumors, has been fitted with a 5.3-inch display and a quad core MediaTek chipset.
