To celebrate the Apple smartphone’s fifth birthday, a new comScore report has tracked the growth of the iPhone right since its launch in 2007. According to the statistics, the five-year old iOS device has made hugely significant contributions to the mobile industry.

Going by data in the US, iOS stands second after Android in the race for the leading smartphone platform. As seen in May, the number of US iPhone users approximated to 35.1 million, while the OS accounted for nearly 31.9% of the market.

Cupertino has released 5 iterations of the Apple iPhone, amongst which the fourth generation seems to have garnered a whole lot of attention. The iPhone 4 apparently ate up 40% of the iOS share, as observed in May 2012.

Its predecessors such as the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G now occupy insignificant places in the smartphone market, while the first generation handset owns only 2% of the present iOS share. The study showed that almost three in every four iPhone users carried an iPhone 4 or 4S.

In terms of network providers, the iPhone is now being shipped via AT&T and other leading carriers in the country such as Verizon and Sprint. With an iPhone 5 in the offing, the possibility of the iOS market increasing substantially looks promising. At present, the scenario appears to be highly competitive, with Android revealing its latest mobile OS just recently.
