Lenovo to introduce smartphone for less than Rs 5000 in India

Lenovo seems to have jumped on to the bandwagon of introducing budget-friendly smartphones in India as it has announced that sub-Rs 5000 handsets are in the pipeline. Manufacturers of entry-level devices such as iBall, Karbonn, Spice Mobiles, Micromax and many others will have to pull up their socks if they wish to compete with Lenovo in this sphere.

It looks like the Chinese manufacturer is aiming at taking on big names like Nokia and Samsung, which have reigned over the mobile phone segment for quite some time now. And the decision of entering the entry-level market has been taken by the OEM to cash in on a trend currently seen in emerging markets like India.

According to The Hindu Business Line, Nick Reynolds, Executive Director – Worldwide Product Marketing, Lenovo has himself agreed that people have started switching to smartphones from basic handsets. This means the conglomerate plans to introduce contenders which are apt for first-time budget-conscious smartphone users. We understand that the company will be investing in making its presence felt through advertising and marketing as well.

Only recently, the Intel-powered K900 had dropped anchor in India along with its 5 other siblings, namely A706, A390, P780, S820 and S920. The former may be attached with a hefty retail tag, but all of the latter devices do not break the bank and start at Rs 8,689. All of these gadgets make the most of the Android platform.

For refresher’s sake, let’s take a look at some of the key specifications of the K900, which made its debut in the subcontinent only last week. The phablet takes advantage of a dual core Intel Atom Z2580 processor clocking in a speed of 2GHz and 2GB of RAM. Apart from a 5.5-inch IPS 1920 x 1080p touchscreen, the front panel houses a 2MP camera and a 13MP snapper resides on the rear side. This Android Jelly Bean 4.2-based gadget brings 16GB of onboard memory as well as a 2500mAh battery for keeping it charged for a relatively long time.

Although we have found out that Lenovo will soon be launching smartphones that will carry price tags of Rs 5000 or less, it hasn’t let out availability details of the members of this series as yet.
