ISG traces acute increase in mobile phone gaming across U.S. and U.K.

ISG Logo From playing Snake in the 1990s to enjoying gripping gameplay offered by most titles right now, mobile phone games extend unlimited excitement for passing away the time. PopCap Games has announced the outcome of a survey conducted by Information Solutions Group (ISG) which reports an increase in overall mobile gaming across both the U.S. and U.K. It also traces that handsets are now the most preferred gaming gadgets, leaving PCs and video game consoles behind.

The study asserts that smartphone users are the most avid consumers of mobile games. According to the report, approximately 52% of the 2,425 participants stated that they had played a game on their handsets at some point of time in the past. Almost 33.6% of adults in the U.S. and the U.K. claimed to have indulged in mobile phone gaming in the past month, which qualifies them to be ‘mobile phone gamers’. Nearly 24.6% of respondents were cited to have played in the week before, allowing them to be termed as ‘avid mobile phone gamers’.

“Mobile games are, along with social games, the hottest sector of the video game industry by far which derives nearly a third of its overall revenues from sales of mobile mega-hits like Bejeweled and Plants vs. Zombies,” expressed Dennis Ryan, EVP of Worldwide Publishing at PopCap. “As more people purchase smartphones and the entire process of finding, purchasing and playing mobile games becomes as simple as browsing the internet, the mobile games market is going to accelerate even more.”

The other survey findings insist that around 97% of avid mobile phone gamers and 84% of all mobile phone gamers access such titles at least once a week. It has emerged that nearly 50% of mobile phone gamers stated that the amount of time they spend playing games has increased during the past year, while the figure climbs to 63% among smartphone owners. When quizzed on their favorite gaming-capable device around 44% of the survey respondents opted for their handsets. This has propelled mobile devices to the top spot with game consoles and computers being the pick of just 21% and 30% of gamers.

Taking into consideration the purchase and consumption trends, this survey predicts a considerable growth in the mobile games sector.
