iPhone OS 3.1 beta lists iProd device

iProd Plist

Ars Technica reports that recently an updated USBConfiguration.plist was discovered in the latest version of iPhone OS 3.1 beta. This provides strong evidence that Apple is working on an unknown device which is currently called the ‘iProd.’

The iProd 1, 1 was recently discovered in the configuration file. The 1, 1 designation could be due to the model going through its first revision. This indicates that Apple is actively developing a device that runs the iPhone OS.

The first model – identified as iProd 0, 1 – has a standardMuxPTP description. As this model starts with a zero as a first identifier, it could be a prototype.

The iProd 1, 1 device has been allotted a new productID of 4762 and the iProd 0, 1 has been given a productID of 4757. The iProd 1, 1 has been assigned a different ConfigurationDescriptor of “standardMuxPTPEthernet.” iPhone models also possess this designation, and the additional interface identified in the plist for this configuration is “AppleUSBEthernet.” This could indicate that the new device has obtained high-speed networking capabilities.

There are speculations that this may be the rumored Apple tablet, or an iPod Nano or even an iPhone Nano.

This device may see an early release – maybe as early as September.
