iOS 6 to drop Google Maps, may bring along in-house maps instead

Those mulling over iOS 6 can apparently expect an in-house maps app rather than Google Maps on their devices. This application is touted to be along the lines of the Google counterpart, but should provide a relatively faster experience.

According to the latest word, the Cupertino-based company has planned to drop the Google Maps program seen in iOS devices since 2007. The new in-house mapping app developed by the company would be dubbed ‘Maps.’ Since Google will not serve as a backend for the application and it’ll be a complete home-brewed affair, the Google moniker will be taken off. A teaming up of Apple with C3 Technologies, Placebase and Poly9 will mean the complete mapping database is the property of the technology giant.

One of the highlighted attributes of this new software is noted as the 3D mode that allows access to 3D graphics and models. With this inclusion, graphical images can be accessed for searching locations and accessing the relevant navigational and geographical data. Apple has supposedly also designed a new logo for iOS Maps that will feature the company’s 1 Infinite Loop Campus like the existing icon, though it’ll show off a new shade. A feature providing street view capability that replaces the Google counterpart is purported to arrive courtesy of C3 Technologies.

With a lot of people anticipating major changes to the interface elements in terms of iOS 6, a post on 9to5Mac suggests that these expectations may be unfounded. But if the iOS 6 platform is introduced at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference in mid-June, it may indeed land with a fresh Maps app.
