Intermec CS40 rugged mobile computer to unveil by Q4 2010

Intermec CS40a Smartphones have been the flavor of the year in the mobile world. However, many of them cannot be used in rugged and hardy scenarios for those who work in the field, be it at construction sites, pre-sales, merchandising or truck load transportations. In order to fill this requirement, Intermec has launched the CS40, a rugged mobile computer in the form and package of a smartphone.

This solution is said to be ideal for mobile professionals who need high performance barcode scanning coupled with adequate support for the mobile line of business applications. This device operates on Windows Embedded Handheld technologies along with the Windows Mobile 6.5 platform. With this Intermec offering, users can carry out all-inclusive business process transformation, especially those who work in field service.

“Businesses do not have the time or the money for employee downtime; they need reliable line of business applications operating on devices that can handle the rigors of inclement weather and accidental drops to non-cushioned surfaces, not smart phones that are built to run social networking applications and play music,” commented Pat Byrne, President & CEO of Intermec. “The CS40 and Intermec’s broad portfolio of software, services and peripherals provides the industry’s first true comprehensive and seamlessly integrated business solution.”

“Powered by Windows Embedded Handheld (based on Windows Mobile 6.5 technologies), the Intermec CS40 offers business professionals the ability to capture, access, and act on business critical information where and when they need it,” stated Kevin Dallas general manager of the Windows Embedded Business Unit at Microsoft Corp. “Our collaboration with Intermec is another example of Microsoft’s continued commitment to meeting the demands of modern enterprises with innovative, high-performance and connected enterprise handheld devices.”

People in the aforementioned fields would require a robust handset which is well-protected. This is exactly what the CS40 proffers with its ability to endure several four foot drops on concrete from all corners and sides. Moreover, it is protected with IP54 rated sealing which safeguards it from liquid intrusion and dust. Sporting a 3MP camera, it endows users with 3.75G voice and data communications. The smartphone is loaded with a 2D imager and enables high performance 1D/2D barcode scanning. The handset is compatible with all Intermec mobile printers, accessories, peripherals and SmartSystems. Additionally, CS40 support is accessible through Intermec’s INcontrol managed services.

The CS40 can be obtained via Intermec PartnerNet members by Q4 2010.
