Indians check WhatsApp, social networks on waking up

According to a report by Deloitte, a majority of smartphone users in India check their phone first thing in the morning and last thing before they go to sleep. Communication platforms like WhatsApp and social networks are looked at immediately, followed by emails and SMSes.

Deloitte’s Mobile Consumer Survey 2015 kept track of over 2000 Indians as part of its worldwide research consisting of 49000 participants covering 30 countries. The study found that nearly 78% of people checked their handset within 15 minutes of waking up in the morning. Similarly, 52% of those surveyed used it 5 minutes before retiring for the night.

86% of respondents owned a smartphone as of June 2015, which is 12% more than the figure in 2013. 28% of them glanced at their phone 11 to 25 times a day, 22% a minimum of 26 to 50 per day, and roughly 17% looked at their handset 51 to 100 times every day. Deloitte further discovered that the rate of SMS and voice calls have fallen by 20% in the past 2 years.

Correspondingly, instant messaging saw a 10% rise within the same period. VoIP calls underwent a 22% increase from 26% in 2013 to 48% in 2015. The consumer survey thinks this has happened because data-based calling offers cheaper or free international calls, in addition to making video chats possible. 2/3rd of the individuals interviewed were generally unsatisfied with the quality of voice calls.
