EW Scripps brings live videos to handsets

EW Scripps claims to be the first television group in the U.S. to deploy technology that will allow streaming live videos to mobile phones. Users have to simply tune in to any of their preferred Scripps station via a mobile app, to enjoy the facilities of this new platform.

In cases of breaking news or severe weather conditions, the apps on-screen display will prompt for the streaming content to be viewed. Clicking on the prompter will open up live simulcast of the station’s on-air content or may also view coverage just meant for mobile devices. Users will receive push notifications as well as SMS and email alerts, to be informed about live streaming of events. As of now only a few markets in the US can avail of these services, namely Detroit Phoenix, Tampa, Fla., Cleveland, Baltimore, Kansas City, Mo., Cincinnati, West Palm Beach, Fla. and Tulsa, Okla.

“When it comes to delivering news and information, we already own live coverage on television and the Web. That’s what our audiences have come to expect of us. This move brings that level of commitment to the exploding smartphone and tablet consumer space,” shared Adam Symson, vice president of interactive for the Scripps television division. “We’ll now close the gap and aggressively deliver live continuous coverage to the massive and growing on-the-go audience.”

Pearl Mobile DTV has lend a hand to Scripps for making these services available on gadgets with the Apple operating system, the Android operating system and certain Blackberry devices, and via a mobile Web browser. Users soon will also be able to view live content that is specifically designed keeping the mobile user in mind, delivered by Scripps.

EW Scripps will make the services available form this month onwards in select markets in the U.S.
