Cost of 4G phones may go as low as $100 in 18 months, says Broadcom

2G and 3G phones in India are available for pretty low prices and in less than two years, 4G devices are likely to be in the same league. The chip-maker Broadcom has made a prediction of sorts saying that devices compatible with the said network connection will be available for a price that’s as low as Rs 6,200. And smartphones will not take more than 18 months to achieve this particular feat.

This report has surfaced on the web through PTI. A Broadcom executive has told the news agency that carriers in the US are willing to purchase 4G gadgets that cost $100 which is approximately the amount we have mentioned above. In India, as of now, you can easily lay your hands over a decently spec’d 3G handset for a price even less than this.

Also, big players are not likely to sell these gadgets for the cheap amount. Relatively unknown brands or local companies are the ones who are expected to bring such devices to the market, which is also the case in India right now. And this is possible for the latter type of conglomerates because they do not have to spend their resources on their product’s marketing.

The Broadcom executive has also revealed that Reliance Jio that has 4G spectrum in all the telecom circles in India can play an important role in driving down the cost in the subcontinent. And it has also been said that there could be a price difference of around $10 between phones in India and the US as the spectrum allocation in the two countries differ.

But as we said, there are still 18 months to go before we are able to buy 4G devices for such low asking amounts.
