Seemingly, revelations highlighted by comScore’s MobiLens service could enable both companies and consumers gauge immediate as well as emerging fashions in the mobile phone segment. The Internet market research company has detailed the scenario in the U.S. mobile phone industry over the past three months up to February 2011, suggesting that Samsung and Google Android led the way through this period.

The company has disclosed that the study accounts for over 30,000 mobile subscribers in the U.S. The data derived from this group underscores that Samsung tops the OEM market share with about 24.8 percent of the surveyed audience flaunting a device from the manufacturer. LG and Motorola occupied the second and third position in this table, respectively. It has also stated that 8.6 percent users own a RIM handset, placing the company at the fourth slot while Apple registered a 0.9 percent growth to land on the fifth place.

While the handset market is clearly led by Samsung, Google stands at the forefront with its Android operating system. The company boasts of about 33 percent subscribers whereas RIM stands next with around 28.9 percent. Google also seems to have achieved a remarkable feat as the study refers to the Android as being used by 1 in every 3 smartphone owners in the country. Apple, Microsoft and Palm have managed to acquire the third, fourth and fifth positions, correspondingly.

The research has divulged that text messaging remains at the core of mobile usage activities with approximately 68.8 percent users employing the service. Activities such as using browser and downloaded apps have been performed by 38.4 percent and 36.6 percent users, respectively. In addition, some 26.8 percent users access social networking sites and blogs from their mobile devices while 24.6 percent prefer playing games on them.

With a firm base at hand, Samsung and Android appear to be in a comfortable position at the moment. However, with the rumored iPhone 5 as well as advanced smartphones from RIM, Motorola and others lined up for the year, any change in these figures wouldn’t be a surprise.
