CloudTalk: Messaging preferred by smartphone users over phone calls

CloudTalk Survey A survey conducted by CloudTalk to find the top five activities by American mobile users reveals that making calls isn’t something that tops a smartphone user’s list of activities.

Out of 10 more than 7 people are engaged in messaging while nearly 6 indulge into emailing, placing them in first and second position respectively. Mobile users are also bitten by the social networking bug which places this activity in the third position with about 50 percent members visiting such sites every day.

“The results clearly indicate smart phones are primarily used as a communication device, but what’s really interesting is that it appears the intrusiveness of phone calls has forced talking to take a back seat to more convenient modes of communication, such as text messaging,” said David Hayden, chairman and CEO of CloudTalk. “What we’re seeing at CloudTalk is that people love to talk, as long as, (like text messaging), it doesn’t require our immediate attention, we can respond on our own time and see the entire conversation thread at a glance – it’s just more convenient.”

Surprisingly, talking on the phone stands in the fourth place with about 43 percent users. And on the fifth stand is web surfing with four out of 10 smartphone members. In fact, majority of surveyed consumers revealed that they prefer messaging compared to making calls.

Participants of the survey by CloudTalk were asked what their ultimate communications app would be if they had to create it. Again, almost 9 out of 10 opted for texting/messaging, followed by multimedia content sharing, maps, VOIP and finally private group chat.
