BlackBerry outage woes gradually fading away

Not long after making headlines shouting BlackBerry outage, RIM’s core services like BBM and email that were globally disrupted for the past few days are now progressively being brought back on track. The service failure hit the continent of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East region first, gradually expanding to India and North America, including Latin America.

According to RIM, the messaging and browsing delays were mainly caused due to a core switch failure within its infrastructure. The system, which is designed to depend on a back-up switch in case of failure, did not function as expected. This resulted in a backlog which was responsible for the further delay in re-establishment of services.

“You’ve depended on us for reliable, real-time communications, and right now we’re letting you down. We are taking this very seriously and have people around the world working around the clock to address this situation. We believe we understand why this happened and we are working to restore normal service levels in all markets as quickly as we can,” commented Robin Bienfait, Chief Information Officer, RIM, in an official statement.

During this period, users of RIM services were also plagued by a hoax message which only added to the issues. Finally, on October 12, RIM issued an official statement talking about the restoration of its services in different parts of the world. By then, the results of its crisis management had started to show.

As per the latest update, there are reports of a significant amount of BlackBerry services worldwide brought back on track, consequential to the repair work happening at RIM.
