AT&T expands services in South Carolina

AT&T Logo To offer new mobile services, devices and advanced audio and video content to users, AT&T brings its third generation (3G) mobile broad network in Florence and extends the Greenville and Charleston 3G network.

The expansion of the network is a part of the company’s current efforts to leverage innovation and investments to provide valuable benefits of smartphones and mobile broadband services. The company claims that it is committed to improve network capabilities to cater to the growing needs of customers.

“We are committed to providing South Carolinians access to the advanced wireless broadband services that help drive economic growth and make a difference in people’s lives,” said Pamela Lackey, President, AT&T South Carolina. “Continuing to enhance and expand our networks is the result of ongoing work by the state’s leaders to foster a business climate that encourages investment and welcomes new technologies.”

AT&T provides a wide range of mobile handsets from several manufacturers. These include mobile handsets supporting six different operating systems and five distinctive e-mail applications. With the Media Mall 2.0, users can download over 90,000 content options and other applications available on the Internet.

“Our goal is to add 3G service in new areas throughout South Carolina and to boost network capacity where we already have this technology in place,” said Alison Hall, vice president and general manager, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets – Carolinas. “With this expansion, our customers can continue to ride the leading edge of mobile broadband with emerging devices and thousands of mobile applications.”

AT&T also releases new plans to upgrade the 3G network across the nation with HSPA 7.2 technology to offer significantly faster mobile broadband speeds to users. AT&T plans to develop these upgrades in the fourth quarter and its completion is estimated in 2011. Along with this initiative, AT&T also plans to develop additional backhaul capacity to cell sites. This approach is expected to support today’s unmatched growth in mobile data traffic and the expected demands of next-generation networks.

The 3G mobile broadband network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies. The family includes GSM and UMTS, claiming to be most open and widely used wireless network platforms across the globe. Available in over 350 major metropolitan areas, AT&T also delivers 3G data roaming in nearly 100 countries along with voice calling in 215 countries.
