Apple Apps Store hits 1 billion application downloads

One billion application

Here’s another big success in Apple’s kitty. It recently announced that 1 billion applications have been downloaded from its App Store. This will surely be a moment of pride for Apple as it has hit the milestone in just nine months after its launch.

The 1 billionth application was downloaded by Connor Mulcahey and he has won a collection of Apple prizes including a iTunes gift card worth $10,000, an iPod Touch, a MacBook Pro and Time Capsule. Apple has set a remarkable record for itself and it is said that millions of applications are downloaded each day from the store.

The App Store offers more than 35,000 applications to its millions of fans across 77 countries. The applications available at the App Store are designed to leverage all the groundbreaking technology of the iPhone such as an accelerometer, multi-touch Interface, GPS, real time 3D graphics and more.

“The revolutionary App Store has been a phenomenal hit with iPhone and iPod touch users around the world, and we’d like to thank our customers and developers for helping us achieve the astonishing milestone of one billion apps downloaded,” explains Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “In nine months, the App Store has completely revolutionized the mobile industry and this is only the beginning.”

The new iPhone OS 3.0 software will include more than 1,000 new developer APIs which will allow In-App Purchases, Peer-to-Peer connections, App control for accessories and Push Notifications. This new software will also integrate more than 100 customer features including cut, copy, paste, spotlight search, landscape keyboard and view for all key iPhone applications, MMS support, expandable parental controls for apps, TV shows and movies from the App Store.

Well, this huge success may provoke other leading players of the mobile phone industry to launch their independent application stores in the near future.
