Android tablet market share in Q411 increased due to Amazon Kindle Fire, says Flurry

Flurry Report

The tablet market has been expanding at a fast rate and according to a new Flurry report, the increase in the market share of those running on the Android platform is mainly due to the Amazon Kindle Fire launch, in the fourth quarter of 2011. This new research has taken cues from the recently conducted Strategy Analytics study which showed the global tablet shipment figures for Android and Apple tablets.

According to the Strategy Analytics report, although Apple’s iPad ruled the tablet roost with 15.4 million shipped units, the Android slate market share also recorded an improvement as the statistics increased from 29 percent in Q410 to 39 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011. The official Flurry blog reveals the reason for this drastic increase in Android tablet shipments to be the introduction of the Amazon Kindle Fire which was released in September last year.

Apparently, a lot of people may have been gifting or getting Amazon’s baby as Christmas presents during this past holiday season in the U.S. The Samsung Galaxy Tab dominated application session usage on Android in November 2011 with 63 percent. However, the Kindle Fire seemed to have surfaced with the intention of giving some tough competition to the Samsung mobile device by recording 36 percent of app usage in January. The Galaxy Tab also experienced a decline in application sessions from 63 percent to 36 percent within a period of two months only.

The implications of this Flurry report indicate that after the iPad and the Samsung Galaxy Tab, the new Amazon Kindle Fire seems to come somewhere near the top as far as app session usage and download rates are concerned.
