Samsung envisages Android phones to be well under $100 in 2010

Samsung i7500 Smartphone Android touchscreen phones are all the rage, with people buying them in droves. However, the cost of these smartphones could prevent them from achieving mass popularity.

During the announcement of the eco-friendly Samsung Reclaim in the US by Sprint, a Samsung official said that, by next year, Android touchscreen phones will be available for “well under $100.”

According to Unwired View, Casey Ryan – senior product development manager at Samsung – told the New York Times that “by next year, touch-screen phones, with full Web browsers running the Android operating system will be available for well under $100.”

It is unclear whether he was talking about free or contract phones, or subsidized phones. Also he could have been talking about Samsung in particular, or the wider market.

Currently, the least expensive Android phone on the US market, the T-Mobile G1, costs $149.99 with a 2-year contract agreement. There aren’t any Android handsets officially available on a pay as you go offering in either the UK or the US.

Not much is known about the upcoming cheap Android devices yet. Guess we will have to wait until next year.
