2013 Google Nexus 7 versus Xolo Play Tegra Note

Not sure if you’re hot for Google’s Nexus 7 2013 or its newest rival, the Xolo Play Tegra Note? We’re pitting the two tablets against each other to help you pick the right one depending on your needs. Or maybe you’re not interested in either and are just curious to see if they’re any good. Either way, here goes.

Processors:

Xolo’s Tegra Note (not to be confused with Gigabyte’s Tegra Note 7), uses a 1.8GHz quad core Nvidia Tegra 4 processor with its 72-core GeForce GPU. That’s what the whole deal is about – the Tegra badge of honor it wears in its moniker and all. The 2013 Nexus 7 on the other hand, embeds a 1.5GHz quad core Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset.

Now you won’t find most hardware experts firmly taking a side when it comes to either chip, but there’s no denying that the Snapdragon one does better graphics. Apart from the GPU, both score close enough in benchmark tests to warrant continued debates on the subject. So merely picking one tablet over the other based on the processor may not be the best idea.

Memory and OS:

The Google slate gets its kicks from 2GB of RAM, unlike the Tegra Note and its 1GB RAM. The former is sold in 16GB and 32GB options, while the latter can be grabbed with 16GB ROM and up to 32GB expandability via a microSD card slot. You can already get Android KitKat 4.4 on the 2013 Nexus 7, while the Xolo device is currently on Jelly Bean 4.2.2.

Screen and battery:

The Xolo slate has a 7-inch 800 x 1280p touchscreen and a 4100mAh battery which delivers up to 8 hours of 720p video playback. Its Google rival claims that you can squeeze out up to 9 hours of active usage from its 3950mAh battery. It’s got a 7-inch display too, but this one renders 1920 x 1200p HD resolution visuals and features Corning Gorilla Glass protection.

Cameras, connectivity and price:

Both tablets have 5MP cameras on the rear panel. In terms of connectivity, the Tegra Note only does Wi-Fi, while the new Nexus 7 can surf LTE networks too. The former can be picked up for roughly Rs 18,000 in India, while the latter’s 16GB Wi-Fi variant sells for Rs 21,000. Fancy its 32GB Wi-Fi only or LTE unlocked version? That’ll be Rs 24,000 or Rs 28,000.

We like the connectivity options, touchscreen and 2GB RAM on the 2013 Nexus 7 better. One of the points where it loses out to the Xolo Play Tegra Note is its price. But then, if you’re fine with a Wi-Fi only device and are keen on the best investment possible, the Rs 3,000 difference in cost may not hurt your wallet.
