Dialog Semiconductor’s DA8620 steps in for Lenovo S800

Dialog Semiconductor, Lenovo Logo Who wouldn’t mind embracing mobile phones that feature transparent color displays as they surpass consumer needs with their transparency effect? Dialog Semiconductor announced that its SmartXtend passive matrix OLED (PMOLED) driver IC dubbed DA8620 is being adopted by Lenovo in its S800 handset.

This mobile phone claims to be the first to incorporate a transparent color display utilizing Dialog’s SmartXtend driver technology. SmartXtend enables the main display of mobile phones specifically those delivering QVGA resolution to use PMOLED.

“I am delighted to announce Lenovo as the first commercial adopter of our SmartXtend OLED driver IC. Lenovo has a well founded reputation for implementing cutting edge technologies, and I have no doubt the S800 handset will exceed consumer expectations while providing a new user experience with its transparency effect,” commented Dr. Jalal Bagherli, CEO at Dialog Semiconductor.

PMOLEDs are capable of rendering enhanced picture and color quality, viewing angle and video performance. These displays are delivered with a transmittance effect more than 50 percent. SmartXtend allows PMOLED panels to be integrated as the high-resolution main display in mobile phones, MP3 players and other portable devices.

“Together with our module partners we have perfected this technology over recent years to now offer portable device manufacturers a display technology that provides superior performance and enables unique features, such as transparency and flexibility. The Lenovo S800 early adopter design win will stimulate the PMOLED mobile market and represents our next milestone on route to mass production,” added Jalal Bagherli.

SmartXtend is touted to be a set of driving techniques for PMOLED that presently lends support to resolutions up to QVGA. It accommodates an incredible multi-line addressing scheme, pre-charge schemes and precise dynamic current matching to lower peak current and the average power usage of the display.

The DA8620 is available and is being shipped in bare die form with gold bumps ideal for mounting as chip-on-flex or chip-on-glass.
