Unreal Engine 3 on iPhone 3GS

Epic Unreal Engine

Ok, don’t fall off a log with excitement caused by this tidbit. According to AppleInsider, Epic Games has recently demonstrated the proof-of-concept to AnandTech with a playable demo. Seemingly, the first-person shooter runs a modified level from the game Unreal Tournament, and employs dual-touch controls.

Well, the Unreal Engine will now be running on the iPhone 3GS. Much to thrill, it’s the same engine that runs stimulating games like BioShock, Gears of War, and Mass Effect, now on the iPhone.

Apparently, the game features a virtual thumbstick on the left side of the touchscreen to control character movement. Users can now aim and shoot at enemies on screen merely by using their right thumb. In fact, the 3D demo actuates Open GL ES 2.0 which is believed to be available only on the iPhone 3GS and new iPod touch.

Reportedly, Epic Games plans to make the engine available for licensing to companies who want to make or port games to the iPhone and iPod touch at some point. For the moment, Epic isn’t contemplating to release any games for the platform, reveals AppleInsider.
