The super-secure Turing Phone which boasts of being unhackable and having a body stronger than steel or titanium, is open for reservations. Its 16GB, 64GB and 128GB models are priced at $610, $740 and $870, respectively. Although the company lets you pre-book a unit for yourself, it hasn’t actually revealed its exact launch date. Additionally, you won’t be required to pay anything, but to merely submit your name, mail ID, phone number and address details in order to register your interest.
So reserving a handset does not bring along any official obligation from the part of the company or the potential buyer. The Turing Phone appears quite plain from the front, but has a much more interesting rear panel. If superheroes had signature smartphones, this is what they would look like. The design draws part of its inspiration from Interstellar’s spaceship Endurance. The red and white variant called the Cardinal, also takes cues from the manned robot Gundam RX-78 in the Mobile Suit Gundam anime series.
The influence of the epic English poem Beowulf lies heavy on the purple and blue version of the Turing Phone, with its scaled texture and all. Then there’s the Pharaoh edition as well as the Black Dragon to pick from. The latter device has yet to be revealed in full and it will cost $999 for 128GB. The smartphone is claimed to be stronger than another other, thanks to its frame which is built from liquidmorphium, an amorphous alloy of zirconium, copper, aluminum, nickel and silver. But it’s not just about how tough it is.
The manufacturer of the handset, Turing Robotic Industries, touts it to offer end-to-end encryption to protect privacy to the maximum level. No servers are involved in the process of users exchanging data between two of these ‘cipher smartphones,’ to ward off potential threats. Until the device is put through torture tests by skeptics, we won’t know how vulnerable it is to mischief makers. No system is unhackable, and it’ll only be a matter of time before security experts manage to uncover its weak spots.
