BSNL and MTNL want to boost coverage, data speed with new mobile sites

BSNL and MTNL have announced that they’re aiming to provide better coverage by strengthening their networks via additional mobile sites numbering at 28300. Both state-owned companies are also bent on making improvements to their data services in order to enhance 3G download speed by almost six times, thus greatly benefiting the end user.

MTNL is building its network’s strength by adding 566 BTSs (base transceiver stations) in Mumbai and 800 BTSs in Delhi. The company will also erect 1080 new IP-based Node-Bs (3G antenna) in Delhi and the same number in Mumbai. On the other hand, BSNL will enhance its network with the help of 10052 Node Bs and 14263 BTSs in order to carry on with its phase 7 expansion plan.

All in all, MTNL will work on better coverage in Mumbai and Delhi by tossing in 3526 mobile sites which happen to involve 2G and 3G equipment. The details we mentioned above were disclosed in the Lok Sabha by Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, says a post on NDTV.

The two state-run companies are even looking to upgrade their high speed downlink packet access 3G network that ‘currently and theoretically’ supports 3.6Mbps and 84Kbps of download and upload speeds, respectively. BSNL and MTNL are set on offering download and upload speeds of 21.1Mbps and 5.76Mbps per sector in each node-B.

As for questions about the government’s proposals on increasing the average speed of internet in India, Prasad noted that the ambitious and still-in-progress national optical fiber network will provide capacity of 100Mbps to each village panchayat it connects.
