South African instant messaging app Mxit comes to India for feature phones

Another social networking software that goes by the name of Mxit has made its grand entry in India. The developers of the South Africa-based instant messaging application know that the smartphone realm has a lot of competition with apps like WhatsApp, Line, WeChat, BBM and more vying for users’ attention. Hence, this company has decided to bring its messenger to the feature phone segment that has a lot of scope due to lack of multiple options.

The company claims to bring multiple attributes to basic devices which so far have only been made available for smartphones. It wishes to reach as many as 500 million users in the country as it will be made available for feature phones, smartphones as well as tablets. And it could well be possible considering that only about 200 million mobile subscribers out of 900 million possess smartphones.

It obviously requires a data connection and tags along games as well. The application facilitates one-on-one as well as group chats and is available in Hindi, apart from English. In order to reach a large number of people in India, it will be updated with support for 10 more regional languages and one of them will be Telugu.

Mxit is pretty popular in its home country South Africa and is used by as many 46 percent people in the African country. Cricketer and former Indian team coach Gary Kristen has been roped in as its brand ambassador. The app can be downloaded on phones based on Java, Nokia’s Asha platform, Android, Windows Phone, iOS and BlackBerry operating systems.

The Mxit instant messenger is available now for free.
