Sony Xperia UL unveiled for Japan

The rumored Sony Xperia UL has been officially unveiled by the Japanese conglomerate, and the 5-inch phone has been announced to be a carrier-specific affair for the home country. However, as opposed to what was being speculated, it does not feature a Snapdragon 600 processor at its heart; instead, it grabs on to an S4 Pro chipset. No word is out yet about its price in the said nation, but its release date has been set for May 25.

White, black and pink are the three shades it will be sold dipped in. A carrier named KDDi will be offering it on its au network. The existence of this smartphone was given away by a few leaked images which had surfaced last week. These had proof that it will indeed come equipped with the water and dust resistant attributes which we’ve seen on the flagship Z phone. It has received IPX5/8 and IP5X certifications, making it fit for underwater and rugged use.

Coming to its specifications, it can be observed that a 5-inch full HD Reality display with a pixel density of 443ppi forms one of its main highlights. And as expected, the Mobile Bravia Engine 2 powers its visuals. This handset is 4G LTE-compatible, and features NFC support as well, alongside Wi-Fi and Bluetooth of course. Android 4.1 is the OS of choice, while a dual camera setup can also be found in it.

On its rear rests a 13MP snapper with an Exmor RS mobile sensor. A number of advanced features including the ability to shoot videos at 1080p, click photos at 15 clicks per second and more have been granted to it by the company. The capacity of its secondary camera remains unclear at the moment. The processor we talked about in the space above is a quad core one, with its speed clocked at 1.5GHz.

This chip is complemented by an Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB worth of RAM. A 2,300mAh battery powers it from within, and coming to its internal memory, it has been locked down at 16GB. A microSD card slot however is present for further expansions. There’s no word out yet about if or when the Sony Xperia UL will be headed to markets outside Japan.
