Sony Ericsson reveals Panel SDK for developers

Sony Ericsson Panel SDK

In an effort to motivate the budding developers for designing content for the new Xperia X2, Sony Ericsson recently unveiled the Panel SDK. The SDK is inclusive of a Panelizer which transforms Flash, Java and Windows Mobile applications and Project Capuchin into Panels for the Xperia X2.

The development kit also simplifies the development of HTML panels. The Panelizer facilitates developers to create native applications and employ 3D graphics, since the Xperia X2 supports OpenGL ES 1.1. The handset also incorporates a Java Runtime that runs Java/Capuchin applications as well as native applications.

“Putting developers’ applications directly in front of consumers is a crucial focus for us. We created the Panel SDK to streamline the development process, minimising the time it takes to get applications directly to the consumer and providing developers with additional revenue opportunities,” states Christopher David, Head of Developer and Partner Engagement at Sony Ericsson.

Developers can submit their Panels to PlayNow arena, functional in 18 countries and offers a 70 percent net revenue share. The journey from submission to sales will be accomplished within 30 days for the accepted Panels. However, verification or signing might wait until Sony Ericsson has reviewed the application.

The Xperia boasts of a 3.2-inch (480 x 800) WVGA touchscreen display. It features an 8.1 megapixel camera with 16x digital zoom, full QWERTY keyboard, HSPA (7.2 Mbps downlink / 2 Mbps uplink), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, microSD and microSDHC memory card support.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 is expected to reach the markets by Q4, 2009.
