Sharp to bring 3D displays to mobile devices

3D LCDMobile users can now encompass 3D displays. Yes, Sharp Corporation has crafted a 3D touchscreen LCD. It is equipped with the industry’s highest brightness that can toggle between 2D and 3D modes. Users can see 3D pictures without having to wear special glasses, thereby enabling this LCD to be ideal for mobile devices.

The newly built 3D LCD applies a parallax barrier system to exhibit 3D images. This parallax barrier, which has a sequence of vertical slits, is integrated into an ordinary LCD to regulate the path of light reaching the right and left eyes, thus developing a sense of depth.

The 3D LCD considerably enhances image quality by achieving high brightness as well as low crosstalk due to progress in CG-Silicon technology and optimization of the parallax barrier. Advances in CG-Silicon technology have seemingly minimized the wiring width in the LCD panel, thereby enabling more light to pass and doubling the brightness.

Moreover, optimizing the parallax barrier design has augmented the effectiveness of light, thus drastically decreasing crosstalk. Moreover, the thickness of the LCD module is said to be the same as usual 2D displays although it is a touchscreen display. As 3D images may be exhibited in both portrait and landscape screen modes, it is perfect for chic mobile devices like smartphones.

Mass production of these 3D displays would commence in the first half of the year.
