Samsung rolls out Blue Earth eco-friendly mobile phone

Samsung Blue Earth Samsung announces the release of its full touchscreen eco-friendly mobile phone called the Blue Earth. Initially showcased at the Mobile World Congress 2009 in Barcelona, the phone seems to be highly anticipated because of its elegant design, eco-friendly approach and enhanced multimedia features.

The eco-friendly phones previously available are equipped with limited features. However, the new stylish Samsung Blue Earth built with eco-friendly materials offers advanced multimedia features and consumes less energy. The eco-friendly Samsung phone is manufactured from Post Consumer Material (PCM) which is drawn out of water bottles. This substance is beneficial in decreasing fuel consumption and carbon emission during the manufacturing process. The phone and its charger do not contain hazardous substances like Brominated Flame Retardants (BFR), Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and Phthalate.

“Samsung’s Blue Earth is not just another addition to our mobile line-up, but a significant step forward in our commitment to protecting the environment,” said JK Shin, Executive Vice President and Head of the Mobile Communication Division of Samsung Electronics. “I am very pleased to announce the launch this landmark eco mobile, and Samsung will continue to introduce innovative eco-friendly mobiles like Blue Earth to target the broader consumers ”

The user interface of the device is simple and designed elegantly that emphasizes on preserving and protecting the environment. The phone offers an Eco Mode that brightens the screen and allows setting the backlight duration and Bluetooth to energy-efficient mode with just a single click. The phone also offers a unique function called Eco Walk, with which users can count their steps with a pedometer. This function allows analyzing the reduction in CO2 emission caused by walking instead of driving a vehicle.

The Blue Earth boasts of a 3.2 megapixel camera with advanced functions like Face detection, Smile shot and Photo editor. The device offers 16M WQVGA TFT LCD 3.0-inch touchscreen. It supports video formats like H.263, WMV MPEG4 with video recording and playing of 15 fps and audio formats like MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA) / WMDRM, OMA DRM. Further, this WiFi enabled phone also supports connectivity features like HSDPA 3.6 Mbps 900/2100 and EDGE and GPRS850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900. Other notable features include stereo FM, RDS, A2DP Bluetooth stereo headset and USB 2.0 HS. At 199g, the phone measures around 108mm x 53.6mm x 14.2mm. The handset offers 1080mAh battery and comes with an internal memory of 130MB and external memory up to 16GB with microSDHC card.

The Blue Earth offers a 5 star eco charger uses around 0.03W of power in standby mode. With the Voluntary Agreement of European Commission IPP (Integrated Product Policy) pilot program, Samsung has declared to display energy consumption ratings on the no-load mode of phone’s charger. The solar panel located on the back of the phone generates sufficient power to use the handset anywhere which ensures optimum usage of the renewable solar energy. The packaging of this eco-friendly phone is made from easy-to-recycle paper and printed in soy ink. The packaging also gives a simple do-it-yourself idea to use the package like a photo frame or a pencil box.

The eco-friendly Samsung Blue Earth is expected to launch this month in Sweden and will soon ship to France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Portugal and other European and Asian countries. The pricing details of the phone are not revealed.
