Samsung publicizes mobile widget SDK for TouchWiz

Samsung logo Mobile phone developers can now apply their expertise and design widgets for various Samsung phones across multiple platforms, including Samsung’s propriety operating system. Samsung Mobile Innovator recently publicized the availability of the mobile widget software developer kit for its innovative TouchWiz user interface.

The Samsung Mobile Widget SDK is developed on open-source Eclipse platform, which would offer necessary tools for the developers, enabling them to design finest widgets for Samsung mobile phones. Samsung Mobile Innovator aims to carry out developers’ education, application distribution and marketing and provide developer tools.

“Samsung fully recognizes the challenges that developers face to develop and market mobile applications to consumers and businesses. The Samsung Mobile Innovator program is a global program focused on giving developers the tools and the support that they need to develop and market widgets for Samsung’s lineup of TouchWiz based devices and applications for different Samsung phones,” quoted Omar Khan, senior vice president of strategy and product management, Samsung Telecommunications America.

With Samsung Mobile Innovator program, developers can have real-time, 24/7 access to Samsung’s Virtual Device Lab via which they explore and remotely test their applications on all current Samsung phones. The developer tool kit is inclusive of budding SDK tools, the TouchWiz user interface, Windows Mobile, Symbian and Java. Once the widget development process is complete, Samsung Mobile Innovator provides a platform to the developers to put forward their ideas to Samsung. The Samsung Omnia II, will be Samsung’s first handset to include the Widget Gallery.

Samsung will organize the Widget Developer Camp from September 11th to 13th, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency, San Francisco. During the camp, developers will develop widgets related to Social Media, News/Reference, Health/Fitness, Travel/Entertainment or Humor/Fun. Unique and innovative widgets from each category will be awarded $5,000 prize. The judges will also select one Best in Show winner, who will receive $20,000 and get a chance to attend CTIA IT & Entertainment 2009 in San Diego from October 7th to 10th, 2009. Further, their widget will be showcased in Samsung’s booth. Samsung Mobile is accepting applications via their official website, till August 31, 2009.
