Samsung India gleefully fills Nokia void with plans for two mid-range Android phones

Samsung is on the verge of launching two mid-range Android phones in India. Well, the Nokia-Microsoft deal was eventually going to lead to this – various mobile phone manufacturers taking advantage of the lull in Nokia sales to push other affordable options onto shelves. Because few people who can afford mid-segment devices are going to bet on an outgoing brand.

And it’s not just a great time for rivals, it’s also the opportune moment for Android to grab an even higher market share. We mean, Apple’s clearly got nothing to offer in the mid-range tier after all those expectations of a cheap iPhone were quashed. Coming back to Samsung, the two handsets planned for release offer the company one more advantage in the Indian market.

IDC’s recent report states that Micromax is very close to dethroning Samsung with a 22 percent share in the mobile market as compared to the latter’s 26 percent. In other words, thanks to Android being free and open source, lesser known OEMs are starting to offer big brands some tough competition. Samsung needs to step up. But dual SIM, a price tag of Rs 5,000 – Rs 15,000 and access to applications in several Indian languages may be on the cards. Presently, the company’s eStore lists the Galaxy S Duos, Ace Duos, S Advance and Core in the Rs 10,000 – Rs 15,000 segment.
