Samsung carves out S5K3H2, 8 megapixel CMOS imager for mobile phones

Mobile buffs are in for a treat as this new offering from Samsung will enhance their skills and passion for photography. The company has unfurled its latest S5K3H2 which is a 1/3.2-inch 8 megapixel CMOS imager. This new entrant incorporates the company’s enhanced 1.4 micron back side illuminated pixel technology to deliver low-light sensitivity.

The unit touts to offer exceptional image quality, supporting around 15 frames per second at full resolution and 1080p full HD video image up to 30fps. The user experience is leveraged since users can seamlessly record 720p videos at 60fps and VGA resolution at 120fps for slow motion playback on the users’ handset.

“The new imager with BSI is designed to address the increased demand for 8 Megapixel resolution cameras by high-end mobile phone customers, and offers excellent low-light sensitivity as well as 1080p full HD video features,” commented Dojun Rhee, vice president of marketing, System LSI Division, Samsung Electronics. “We continue to expand our product portfolio beyond mobile phones, to serve a wide variety of applications such as DSLR cameras, DVC/DSCs, camera embedded displays and game applications.”

The solution is based on Samsung’s BSI low power process technology and can effortlessly function on 1.2 voltage levels for extended battery life on feature-rich mobile phones. The device is neatly constructed with slim elements and precisely fits in an 8.5mm x 8.5mm auto-focus camera module with a height dimension of 6.0mm.

The 8 megapixel S5K3H2 is now sampling and is expected for mass production in the second quarter of 2011.
