According to the latest news doing the rounds, the off-contract AT&T iPhone 5 can be unlocked easily through iTunes. This will allow prospective users to experience data connections from other carriers all across the globe.

Generally, the process to unlock the handset purchased without contract from the service provider is quite a lengthy one where the user needs to fill out an online form. A fax has to be sent in this regard, after which the device is restored in a span of 5 to 7 days. The good news is that this tedious process is no more a necessity and iPhone 5 owners can simply unlock their devices via iTunes.

This piece of news was confirmed with the technical support team of the US carrier by the folks over at TechCrunch, who used a T-Mobile SIM card while carrying out the restoration trial on iTunes, to test if this procedure worked satisfactorily. They then received a message reading, ‘Congratualations, your iPhone has been unlocked.’

Subsequently, the same microSIM card was toned down to a nanoSIM one to be inserted into the slot. In just a few seconds, the new handset seemed to spot the T-Mobile signal with the calls and Edge data connections kicking in. This process has also been a topic of discussion on the AT&T Forum and some reports confirm it.

Recently, the contract-bound Verizon SIM card displayed its multifaceted attribute as it readily picked up T-Mobile and AT&T signals. However, here we are talking about an off-contract scheme and the process seems to be quite simple.
