O2 offers free Twitter service

Twitter O2 Tweet The UK network carrier O2 recently publicized that subscribers can now enjoy free tweets by means of text. This service will be active from next month, for free.

Social networking through mobile devices is at its peak now and a million customers access Twitter from O2 active monthly. Further, several iPhone users download social networking programs on their handsets. This venture is apparently carried out by O2, by realizing these customer requirements.

“We believe that mobile will soon become the most popular way of accessing social networking sites, giving real time access to tweets and status updates wherever you are. The agreements we now have in place with Twitter and the other key sites brings this a step closer, making it quick and easy for O2 customers to access their favorite social networks straight from their mobile,” commented Antony Douglas, Head of Content at O2.

From August, 2009, O2 users can switch on text notifications within Twitter and receive replies and direct messages. Apparently, users can also send updates to Twitter as a part of their normal text message bundle. O2 had earlier offered similar services by teaming up with social-networking sites like Facebook and Bebo.

This agreement would probably form a basis for future global agreements between Twitter and Telefonica.
