Around a year back, Neilsenwire’s study had placed Apple’s iPhone at the acme position. Well, now the company’s blog shows a growing trend in the mobile world. According to their August data, Android ranks as the most popular operating system among those who have purchased a smartphone in the past six months.

RIM’s Blackberry and Apple’s iOS are currently battling it out for the second place amid recent acquirers. The data used for this statistical finding has been collected over a period which included an entire month of the iPhone 4 availability. The latest handset from Apple hit the streets by the end of July 2010, whereas the data has been gathered from this year’s January to August.

The above data only includes those who have bought a handset within six months. On the other hand, when analyzing the overall ownership of smartphones in the period from January to August, BlackBerry topped the market share with 31 percent. Apple placed in second with a 28 percent of smartphone ownership, followed by Android at a 19 percent. However, RIM’s lead over Apple is said to be slowly fading out.
