Mobile Phones Go Silent in Graz, Austria

Hush Hush Now here’s a city that chose to retain peace in their city and prefers to put all mobile phones on silent mode. The second largest city in Austria, Graz chose to put all mobile phones on silent while traveling through public transport vehicles.

Graz Mayor Siegfried Nagl said he is determined to make sure commuters can travel in peace if they want to. There was an order passed in the city of Graz to put mobile phones on silent while traveling through public transport. “I know I insulted the mobile phone goddess a little,” said Mayor Siegfried Nagl. Adding, “but people need to know they don’t have the right to be on the telephone permanently and constantly. It’s just not healthy never to be able to get any peace and quiet.”

The new rule in Graz has placed a situation of debate between advocates of free speech and commuters troubled with loud ringtones and constant talk on the phone. In Graz, the ban is purely voluntary and commuters can still send text messages or use their laptops.
