Microsoft warns about the consequences of unlocking Windows Phone 7 devices

Windows Marketplace

Jailbreaks and hacked software are quite common in this technologically advanced world. Several jailbreaks have already been seen for Apple’s iOS. The Windows Phone 7 has recently been debuted in countries world over and it was not until last week that we witnessed the release of an unlock tool for the Windows Phone 7. Interestingly, a Microsoft spokesperson issued a statement to WinRumors, which advises its customers not to unlock their smartphones as this would render several features dysfunctional.

Microsoft apparently forewarned, “We anticipated that people would attempt to unlock the phones and explore the underlying operating system. We encourage people to use their Windows Phone as supplied by the manufacturer to ensure the best possible user experience. Attempting to unlock a device could void the warranty, disable phone functionality, interrupt access to Windows Phone 7 services or render the phone permanently unusable.”

The statement issued by the company appears to be worded rather calmly. The tool known as ChevronWP7 is said to somehow trick the operating system into registering itself as a WP7 developer device with the app instead of Microsoft. The software can be used to bypass the Windows Marketplace all together, allowing users to side load apps effortlessly.

The folks at WinRumors even approached Microsoft to clarify if the company plans to block Windows Live services or other functions in the device once they are unlocked. However, the company has yet not responded.
