Major companies together come up with MHL consortium

MHL LogoUsers should soon be able to directly connect their mobile phones to HDTVs and displays. To enable this, Nokia, Samsung, Silicon Imaging, Sony Corporation and Toshiba Corporation declared the development of the MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) consortium. It should help craft a new mobile audio/video interface standard that will facilitate connection of handsets to HDTVs and other displays.

The MHL standard is equipped with a single-cable having a low pin-count interface which is compatible up to 1080p high-definition (HD) video and digital audio while concurrently offering power to the phone. The MHL Consortium is also declaring the accessibility of a condensed draft specification.

Products executing MHL technology will encompass HD Video and Digital Audio. Users can exhibit HD video content with up to 1080p picture quality and digital audio from their handset on an HDTV. It is also coming with a provision of power to the mobile phone. Digital HD content can be output from the device over a single cable while power is supplied to the phone. For instance, a handset can play back a full-length feature film on an HDTV without draining power. So when the playback is finished, the phone can still be used for other functions like calls and emails.

High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) technologies shield high-value digital motion pictures, television programs and audio against illegal interception and copying. The practical applications of this announcement would be quite enthusing.
