Yesterday, the company shared the release of the latest TomTom for iPhone app that includes the ability to multitask as well as new maps. With version 1.4, users can look forward to effortless turn-by-turn navigation while engaged in other activities on their iPhone.

The innovative application is incorporated with a host of situation-specific multitasking capabilities and is compatible with iOS 4. According to the company, these have been tailored into the app so as to enable users to gain optimum routing directions even when they use other iPhone applications.

Now iPhone users can benefit from TomTom’s industry-leading navigation and, with its new multitasking functionality, can also take advantage of other great iPhone features while they continue to receive uninterrupted guidance from the TomTom App.”

On the multitasking front users can now make and answer calls in the course of navigation thanks to the visual turn-by-turn instructions. While receiving spoken turn-by-turn instructions from the TomTom app, other apps can also been seen on the screen. Yes, the application operates in the background allowing users to do more on their phone.

The navigation experience has further been enhanced courtesy advanced attributes. Standing out among the wide array are new updated maps. The application is bundled with ready to navigate and most-up-to-date maps. The app is pre-loaded with maps eliminating the need for a data plan, mobile signal or roaming charges to navigate. Other than this, the app now also allows drivers to send details of their present location, destination and route to contacts through email. Hitting the road is made simpler with the departure reminder attribute that enables users to plan their future trips. It can then be added to the calendar with the app prompting a reminder to the iPhone when its time for the trip.
