JCPenney and Cellfire unveil Mobile Coupon Scanning Program

JCPenney Cellfire Logos Few days back JCPenney had introduced an iPhone app and now it has joined hands with mobile coupon service provider Cellfire to offer a novel mobile phone coupon program, enabling users to save money.

Users can now download coupons on their handsets and also scan them from the phone’s display screen while registering. Modern imaging scanners capable of reading these ‘2D’ barcode coupons have been set up at point-of-sale registers in 16 JCPenney stores in the Houston metro area.

“We’ve always made it easy for our customers to save money. These mobile coupons are the ultimate in customer convenience, because there’s no need to clip or carry around a printed coupon, and they can be instantly scanned from a cell phone. It’s another way we’re innovating to enhance the customer’s shopping experience,” stated Mike Boylson, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for JCPenney.

JCPenney plans to promote this initiative by means of web, mobile advertising, and via e-mail to members of JCPenney’s JCP Rewards program in the Houston market. After downloading Cellfire, users can access the same coupons on their handsets that they would obtain from JCPenney through mail. The mobile coupon scanning program employs Motorola DS9808 digital imager scanner that is capable of reading 1D, 2D and PDF-417 bar codes.

“Mobile coupon scanning is the latest way we are helping consumers easily take advantage of the discounts at their fingertips. We believe this will be the first step in taking this technology to a variety of markets and industries, passing along the savings to consumers nationwide,” mentioned Brent Dusing, chief executive officer of Cellfire.

JCPenney will offer coupons almost every week, however some of them will be offered exclusively to JCP Rewards program members. Offers will be inclusive of targeted discounts and mobile-redeemable rewards. To obtain JCPenney coupons, shoppers need to be registered with Cellfire and reside within the Houston metro area. Further, Cellfire delivers savings directly to consumers on their handsets, and presents frequently updated discounts specific to their geographic area.

Although Cellfire is a free service, standard data or usage charges may be applicable depending on the carrier or data plan.
