Intel drops into smartphone business

Intel logo Intel has plans to enter different markets of mobile internet devices. This will put Intel into competition with the big boys and some of its long-time partners such as Apple and Microsoft.

Intel is now developing Linux software called Moblin 2 as the operating system of its new product which will supposedly be in developer’s hands by March and which Intel promises to be a new class of “mobile Internet devices.”

According to Rob Enderle, president and principal analyst at the Enderle Group, “Intel is going to be entering solidly into Apple’s space. It’s going to make for an interesting next decade.”

This move by Intel to tap into the growing market for smartphones and handheld chips has baffled some analysts. Some speculate that Intel may be intending to release a low-budget smartphone. This venture will also endanger its partnership with its longtime collaborator Microsoft.
