HTC Desire Gingerbread update comes with a price

HTC Desire Android 2.3The recent announcement of the Gingerbread OS update to hit the HTC Desire smartphone maybe overwhelming but, will also come with its own drawbacks. According to a post made on the company’s Facebook page, users who upgrade their device will miss out on many previously experienced functions. Due to memory constraints, the handset isn’t capable of providing both the Android 2.3 OS and HTC features.

Stated to be only for experts and developers, the new update will include major changes including removal of many applications. On flashing the device, all customizations, messages, emails, contacts and other personal information will be wiped off. Additionally, it’s recommended for users to backup their data before commencing the upgrade.

A post made on the HTC Facebook page stated, “As we’ve mentioned, this upgrade will remove some important functionality and experiences in your HTC Desire. For that reason, we only recommend upgrading if you’re an expert user or developer. Please make sure to read the full disclaimer about the changes if you do decide to upgrade. Also, flashing this ROM will erase your previous customizations, including any messages, emails, contacts, and other personal information so make sure you backup your data.”

Released for development purposes and not for the general public, users may face problems with the MMS and SMS services. Furthermore, the company also states to take no responsibility for any loss or damage to data or the device, due to the complicated nature of the update.

The Gingerbread upgrade for the HTC Desire smartphone is available from the company’s developer page. Currently handsets in countries such as Germany (Telekom Deutschland), North America, South Korea and Japan are not compatible with the update.
