Those who quite often use Google Maps on their Android 1.6 handsets will now surely have a reason to smile. Finding exact locations and directing the mobile owner to the doorstep of their destination is something that its latest update does. According to the official Google blog, the company has come up with yet another update to their software dubbed as the Google Maps 4.4. This upgrade brings users the ability to directly and effortlessly find places with dedicated Places icons.

With this new functionality, users could simply look up the place they want to visit in their vicinity, and go to updated Place Pages for detailed information on the same. This page had earlier carried information pertaining to reviews coupled with the photos. However, it now includes fresh details such as parking, menu links and prices. The update even informs users about the opening hours of the place, by highlighting those specifications for easy visibility. Hence they might just find all the required information on the Place Pages to make the right choice.

The app launcher on Android handsets will show the new Places icon along with the rest of the applications. On pressing and dragging the icon to the device’s homescreen, users can customize their search with icons for shoe stores, coffee shops, restaurants, theaters or bars. After which the mobile owner can access the detailed list of places in proximity and check out more details on its Place Page.

Users can search for various types of places in the default category and further add-in their ‘most frequent searches’. The search bar on the top of the page can also be used for searching by entering the query. However, the update is available only for devices operating on Android 1.6 or higher.

The upgrade 4.4 can be procured from the Andorid Market by searching for Google Maps. In addition to Android, it is also scheduled to unfurl across the BlackBerry platform through the m.google.com/maps or on the Google Facebook and Twitter pages.
