Google: It’s openness not rooting for Android

Nexus S Android

A couple of days back, the news of the Nexus S being jailbroken fluttered around the web world. In fact, mobile enthusiasts came forward to state that the Android security was weak and could be easily hacked. Well, the Android Developers blog has just highlighted that similar to the Nexus One; Nexus S also has been ‘designed to allow enthusiasts install custom operating systems’.

The folks themselves claim that rooting the Nexus S is extremely easy by simply running ‘fastboot oem unlock’ in the bootloader. While on the subject of the platform’s security, Android’s security team states that the OS does have a strong security strategy which is implemented comprehensively. Each application is sandboxed by default; thereby malicious software cannot interfere with another. It even works hard to fix all the known security holes including those that could be used for the purpose of hacking.

The blog further goes on to say that until handset manufacturers and carriers provide users with means of legitimately unlocking devices, the hostilities between the rooting and security cohorts shall continue. Well, here’s hoping that carriers and manufacturers pick up a thread or two and ‘not force users to choose between device openness and security’.
